The Road to Seward

After surviving the night at Spenard, we grabbed breakfast at Gwennie's - a local haunt recommended by the hostel. We then caught a cab to Great Alaskan Holidays where we picked up our trusty RV before making our way to Seward, Alaska. We loaded up on groceries at Carr's and then headed south along one of the most scenic drives in the world. Highway 1, also known as the Seward Highway, runs from Anchorage to the town of Seward along the eastern edge of the Kenai Peninsula.

Along the way we saw some of the most breathtaking views we'd ever witnessed. Around every bend in the road something new appeared. Every couple of miles there was a place to stop to catch a view and take some pictures. We took advantage of several of these — getting out of the RV to stretch our legs and walk along roadside paths. Our route followed the Alaska Railroad and we caught glimpses of the train. The trains are completely set up for scenic viewing. The passenger cars have huge windows and we could see people eating and enjoying the scenery.

Seward is a popular tourist destination, made more apparent by the massive construction effort taking place on the roadway. The roads were in the process of being paved and with the weather in Alaska, potholes were abundant. Instead of traveling in a comfortable RV, we felt like we were riding along in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Once we made it through the obstacle course, we arrived at Miller's Landing — our home for three days while in Seward. We arrived here at 7:00 PM and before we knew it, we looked at the clock and it was nearly 11:00. We hadn't realized how late it was because the sun is out until past midnight in this part of the world. We cooked a late dinner of halibut on the stove in the RV and hit the sack.
