Exploring Munich

We all awoke with the headaches to prove how much fun we had the previous night. Easter Sunday was our only full day in Munich so we were excited to head out and explore the town.

Since we were a little slow moving we didn't get going until around 12 noon. The first place we headed was to the Glockenspiel am Rathaus, a famous clock tower in the center of town. The clock struck noon and the giant figurines toward the top of the tower began dancing as a growing crowd of tourists gathered around to watch. After the clock was done chiming, we walked for about 5 minutes over to the Lowenbrau Restaurant to eat lunch. We gorged ourselves on traditional Bavarian dishes of pork and various types of sausage.

After lunch we climbed the tower of St. Peter's Church — at the top was a magnificent view of the city. Our legs were burning from the climb as we headed toward the Residenz Museum. We toured about 130 rooms full of artwork and other antiques. After the museum we sat near the Residenz gardens and drank coffee and ate apfelstrudel (apple strudel) with ice cream. The English Gardens weren't far away so we took a stroll along the river through the gardens. There were people everywhere playing informal games of soccer, bocci ball and everything else. We stopped a while and watched several surfers showing off their skills as they rode a big wave in the middle of the river.

For dinner, we walked to Gaststätte Fraunhofer to fulfill our insatiable appetite for German food. We picked a very popular restaurant — the place was packed and we had to get a couple of people to move so that our group could sit together. The waiter was very helpful as we tried to decipher the German menu. We had typical German food — meat and potatoes. Nick tried the "duck chest" which didn't seem traditional but was still great. At the end of our meal, the waiter brought our bill and it totaled up to exactly €100.00. He was so impressed that he offered us a free round of Schnapps and of course we accepted.

Before we went to bed we decided to have 1 drink at the hotel bar, which quickly turned into 2 drinks. Bed time was 2:30 a.m.
